Change of Hours for Porch Store

UPDATE:  Porch store is now closed for the season.  Orders may be placed by email or give me a call!  Eggs are still available self-serve on the porch.

It’s getting darker earlier and earlier.  Therefore we are going to be closing up by 4:00 PM.  We don’t want anyone stumbling around in the dark!  Hours will be 10 AM to 4 PM daily until further notice.  Items are self serve.  If you need any help give us a call or email or beep your horn!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  On another note, body butter and face creams are available again.  They make terrific Christmas gifts!

Final Garden Stuff

So last week was all about kale.  We ended up with triple kale because the “broccoli” we bought turned out to actually be kale.  Those plants were double the kale we’d already planted.  Ate kale all summer, sold it on the porch store and had happy chickens.  Then came the days the temps were nosediving.  What to do with all that beautiful kale?  Well, kale chips, of course, but I also learned you can freeze it up in zip locks for smoothies and cooking.  I spent two full days processing kale!  I crumbled some of the kale chips and put in a jar to add to soups or whatever else might come up.  I can’t stand for things to go to waste, but I am really happy to have kale out of my life right now!  On a side note, our cat Taz found it quite comfy!

Today was cleaning, cooking & freezing up the last of the beets and kohlrabies that have been sitting in the basement for a few weeks.  All that’s left now is one cabbage, which I’m planning to make coleslaw this weekend and freeze whatever is left.  Feeling pretty stocked up for winter.  It was an amazing garden this year!

Kale Yeah!

Kale, glorious kale! It is absolutely LOVING this Fall weather!  Kale has a bad rep for some reason.  I don’t know why.  It’s so pretty and so CLEAN when you pick it.  (LOVE THAT!)  Plus it tastes great, especially mixed with flavorful foods and/or spices, be it in sausage or your own that you add.  If you haven’t tried kale chips, you are missing out.  A little olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder and Parmesan cheese and you have a nice, healthy snack. YUM!  (Even our grandson loves them, and that’s saying a LOT for something that’s green!)  Still available on the porch for $2.00/bunch.

“Beet Down” today! Canning pickled beets.

16 pints today.  Had some leftover I may can tomorrow and about six pounds I’ll probably cook and freeze.  More still growing in the garden.  I LOVE beets, and they are sooooo pretty!  🙂

Veggies are starting to come in!

Now available on the barn porch:  Turnips and some beautiful kale!  Turnips $3.00/bag (approx. 2 lbs.) and kale for $2.00/large bunch.  Also, for a limited time, get a free sample of our lavender-oatmeal soap with the purchase of a dozen eggs.  Stop by!!

Update on shop:  I haven’t been getting out much new product lately as I’m working VERY hard on the physical shop – painting, renovating, etc., so we can get that open soon.  If there is something you are looking for, need or have questions about, please feel free to contact me.  I’m willing to take a day off of painting and gardening if I know someone could use something.

Maple Syrup Time!

Starting to cook down the sap for some yummy maple syrup!  We have a little helper this year!

Sap’s running!!!

Currently, we don’t process a lot of sap.  We just have some buckets on a few trees.  We’ve found that using our propane powered turkey fryer works best in cooking down the sap.  We are hoping to find an old wood stove we can use outside and place a pan on there with a larger surface area for quicker processing.  For now, this will do.  What do all of you use to cook down your sap?

Baby Mama

Some sad news here too….  The babies are growing like weeds and Mama Hen had them out foraging.  Somewhere along the line a hawk came into the picture.  All the babies are safe but their Mama gave her life to protect them.  Very sad to say that she is gone.  My only broody hen, and she was a great mother.  Such is nature, but sometimes I hate it. 😦
